For a startup company or a small business, having a blog is essential to building up an online presence. In fact, if your business doesn’t have a blog, then you are missing out on revenue opportunities.
There are plenty of reasons to have a blog. One of the main reasons is to allow people to find you online and to get people to keep visiting your website.
A blog will help you convert visitors into paying customers, if you blog regularly and use the techniques that I am about to explain below.
Here are the top 3 reasons your business needs a blog:
- To get more website traffic
You need to publish new blog posts frequently in order for your website to rank high on search engines. For example, to get your website ranked high on Google, you need to have well written blogs posts with good keywords that people will search for. Sharing your blog posts on social media will also help draw people back to your website.
- To build your email list
In order to convert visitors into paying customers, your blog post needs to be interesting and help your readers solve a problem. You also need to have a place for them to sign up for your newsletter. You can insert a newsletter sign up form in each blog post. You can also offer other goodies such as ebooks, whitepapers, webinar offers and whatever other freebies you think your audience might like.
- To demonstrate your expertise
Your blog can serve as a way to demonstrate your expertise, skills, and to promote your company. Choose blog topics that help your readers gain new insight or provide a solution to their problems.
You can get an idea of what people are searching for online by using the Google Keyword Planner. This is a powerful tool that allows you to see monthly search volume by keyword.
When planning your blog strategy, keep in mind that there are millions of blogs online. So you might have some competition, based on what industry you are in.
The way you can stand out from the crowd is to research what is already being blogged about and then think of how you can talk about something slightly different.
Give your topics a twist, share your personal story. People like to read stories about other people and their experiences.
Now that you understand why you would be missing out if you don’t establish a blog that is updated regularly let’s talk about some of the issues that business owners may face when trying to implement a blogging schedule.
But I Don’t Have Enough Time
The number one excuse I hear from business owners and even startup founders is that they just don’t have enough time to write blog posts.
Time is a very valuable thing for entrepreneurs who are so busy trying to run their business. Set aside 1-2 hours per week and just write a few paragraphs.
The best way to get started with blogging, is to sit down and just write whatever comes off the top of your head. In the beginning your writing may not read the best, but after a few paragraphs you will be surprised to see your own style and voice develop and your ideas will start coming together.
Outsource the Blog Writing
If you still feel that you just don’t want to put the time into blog writing, you can also outsource the blog writing to a freelancer or hire a content writing service.
What to Blog About?
As I explained earlier, your blog posts should help your readers and provide a solution to some type of issue or problem they are facing.
If you’re a dentist, you can write about different dental procedures?
If you’re a software development company, you can write about new technology that solves everyday business problems.
If you’re a business coach, then offer practical ways for business owners to be more productive at what they do.
If you’re a fitness coach then blog about workouts that help people lose weight or share recipes and meal plans.
How to Get People to Read Your Blog Posts
After you have written some good quality articles on your blog, you need to promote and share your posts.
You can share on Twitter, Linkedin and Facebook to get started. But this also requires that you have a good following on these social media sites.
So if generating blog traffic is your goal, then make sure you spend time early on building up your social media profiles.
Here are some tips to help your blog get visibility:
#1 – Share on Twitter
There are many different ways to build up a Twitter following. This social site is a good starting place to build a following and even engage with potential customers for your business. To get started with Twitter, make sure you share a good profile pic and banner image for your page.
Make sure that your bio explains who are you and what company, product or service you provide. Add the city and state or country you are based out of and add a link to your website in the bio.

#2 – Share on Linkedin
You can share your blog posts on your Linkedin profile to your connections. But the best way to get new visitors is to share your blog posts in Linkedin groups. You can find LinkedIn groups to join that are related to your industry, your target audience or your business.
#3 – Share on Facebook
Post articles on your business Facebook page and also in Facebook groups. Similar to Linkedin groups, you can find groups related to your subject area and your target audience. If you have a budget, you can also pay Facebook to boost your page posts.
Once people read your blog post, you need to give them a reason to keep coming back and engaging with you. Invite people to post in the comments section of your blog. Also invite people to subscribe to your newsletter.
